HTC: Android 4.4 KitKat coming to the One within 90 days, Google Play edition within 15 days

News:Now that we know which of Google's Nexus devices will be eligible for an update toAndroid 4.4 KitKat, other manufacturers are starting to speak up about their rollout plans as well. Jason Mackenzie, president of HTC America, confirmed to us in an interview that the company is going to aggressively push out the latest version of Android to the HTC One. The Google Play edition will be updated within the next 15 days, the Developer edition and unlocked versions will get it within 30 days, and the remaining SKUs in North America (including all carrier variants) will have it in 90 days or less. With the exception of the Google Play edition, HTC plans to keep its signature Sense UI at version 5.5 (which has been available on global devices running Android 4.3); and although Mackenzie couldn't go into details on how the new KitKat features will be implented in Sense, we expect to see plenty of them make an appearance in the update in some way.

HTC reportedly scales back production after slump in smartphone sales

News: According to multiple reports, HTC has paused production on roughly a fifth of its total capacity and has been looking to outsource to contract manufacturers to save money. (Update: The company tells Engadget that it hasn't shut down any of its manufacturing lines) Reuters says that it has seen parts of HTC's factories closed up, and reports that cash flow pressures have forced the smartphone maker to make serious changes -- the company reported its first net loss back in October, a total of $101.2 million. HTC's Chief Marketing Officer Ben Ho told the news service that, "Like any manufacturer, we do volume planning to optimize our lines, our manufacturing and production facilities." At the same time, the WSJ reports that HTC has apparently met with several manufacturers with a view to moving production away from in-house.

Apple retains multitouch patent thanks to Patent Office ruling, forces competition to seek alternatives

Sorry, anonymous Apple multitouch patent challenger -- your victory isn't only temporary, it's also short-lived. The US Patent Office has decided to uphold patent No. 7,479,949 after tentatively invalidating it in December of 2012, which could mean bad news for many of Cupertino's competitors. If those numbers sound vaguely familiar, that's because they're known to most people as the controversial multitouch patent (that covers the downward-swipe gesture as seen in the video after the break) that Apple used against Palm, HTC and Samsung in court. In fact, it was one of the two patents that led to the import ban of some Samsung devices in the US. Needless to say, it now remains a powerful weapon for lawsuits in Apple's arsenal, and rivals best find a way to work around it on their designs.

नई दिल्ली। एचटीसी ने 4.3 इंच के एचडी डिसप्ले और क्वालकॉम स्नैपड्रेगन 400 प्रोसेसर के साथ वन मिनी स्मार्टफोन लांच किया। इसकी कीमत 36, 790 रुपये रखी गयी है। एचटीसी वन का छोटा वर्जन ही एचटीसी वन मिनी है। इन दोनों के डिजायन में काफी समानताएं हैं।

एचटीसी ने इस स्मार्टफोन को डुअल कोर, 1.4जीएचजेड क्वालकॉम स्नैपड्रगन 400 मोबाइल प्रोसेसर, 1 जीबी रैम और 16जीबी ऑन बोर्ड स्टोरेज से अपडेट किया है। हालांकि इसमें मेमोरी कार्ड स्लॉट नहीं है। इसका 1280 गुणा 720 पिक्सल रिज्योलूशन के साथ 4.3इंच सुपर एलसीडी2 टचस्क्रीन डिसप्ले इसे खास बनाता है। साथ ही इस डिसप्ले को बनाने में कार्निग गोरिल्ला ग्लास 3 का उपयोग किया गया है।

एचटीसी वन मिनी में 4.1 मेगापिक्सल अल्ट्रापिक्सल रियर कैमरा के साथ ऑटोफोकस और एलइडी फ्लैश भी है। यह कैमरा फुल एचडी वीडियोज भी रिकार्ड कर सकता है। साथ ही इसमें 1.6 मेगापिक्सल कैमरा है जो 720 पी एचडी विडियो को सपोर्ट करता है। एचटीसी वन मिनी सेंस 5.0 यूजर इंटरफेस के साथ एंड्रायड 4.2.2 जेली बिन से भी अपडेट किया गया है। साथ ही इसकी खास बात है 1800एमएएच बैटरी।

HTC reportedly suffering One mini shortage due to casing problems

HTC just can't catch a break, it seems: Reuters claims that the company now faces a One mini shortage due to both "design difficulties" with the casing as well as other, unnamed factors. The site's sources didn't explain the shortfall in detail, although we likely can't chalk it up to popularity. Analysts weren't expecting HTC to ship more than 200,000 One minis per month, which suggests that any supply problems would hurt the firm's bottom line. We've reached out to HTC for comment, and we'll let you know if it can confirm or deny its manufacturing woes. In the meantime, we'd suggest buying the full-sized One if you can't find its tiny counterpart in stores.

HTC reportedly enlists Robert Downey Jr. in $12 million marketing deal

After shedding several senior execs over the last few weeks, it looks like HTC is looking to recruit, albeit for a different role. In a bid to capitalize on the positive momentum behind its excellent One smartphone, Bloomberg reports that HTC will be recruiting no less than (an actor who plays) Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. will allegedly feature in promotional campaigns as himself (not the aforementioned Avenger or even a time-travelling Holmes) and will even claim final say over creative elements -- hopefully ensuring any appearances Downey Jr. does make aren't as awkward as some recent efforts.
